Desk Research

Conference Details
Desk research—also known as secondary research—is a research method that involves collecting, reviewing, and synthesizing existing data that has already been gathered, processed, and published by someone else. Unlike primary research, which requires you to collect original data directly from the field (such as through surveys, interviews, or experiments), desk research relies entirely on existing sources. These sources include academic journals, books, government reports, industry whitepapers, historical archives, and digital databases.

The primary advantage of desk research is its efficiency in terms of time and cost. Because the data has already been compiled by prior researchers or organizations, you do not need to spend resources organizing field trips, designing questionnaires, or conducting lengthy interviews. It is typically the foundational first step of any research project—often carried out during the literature review stage—allowing scholars to understand the background of a topic, identify existing research gaps, and establish a theoretical framework before formulating their own hypotheses.

However, desk research also comes with certain limitations that require careful handling. Since the data was originally gathered by others for potentially different objectives, it may not perfectly align with your exact research questions, or it might be outdated. Therefore, researchers must practice critical evaluation by cross-referencing multiple reliable sources, verifying author credentials, and ensuring the information's authenticity before incorporating it into their studies.
